A little about us
We’re Catkin Ceramics – a small, family-run business that first took root during the lockdown days and has been growing ever since. What started as a simple curiosity about throwing clay quickly turned into a full-blown passion. With time on our hands and clay under our nails, we began learning, experimenting, and slowly building something we love.
That was a few years ago now, and while the kiln’s gotten hotter and our techniques sharper, our love for making hasn’t changed one bit. I (Alex) am still hooked on throwing – there’s just something deeply satisfying about forming a piece from a spinning mound of clay. Sally, on the other hand, gave the wheel a valiant try and swiftly decided it wasn’t for her. But she’s found her rhythm in handbuilding – crafting beautiful, expressive pieces that bring their own character and charm.
We’re based in the heart of Winchester, Hampshire, where life is always lively. With five kids between 14 and 28, the house is full, the help is mostly helpful, and there’s never a dull moment. It’s chaotic, creative, and completely us.
We put care into every piece we make, and each item tells a little part of our story. Our pricing reflects the quality, the time, and the growing experience behind every mug, bowl, or sculptural form – and we try to describe each one as clearly and honestly as we can.
We’re nearly always open to commissions too. So if something you loved has sold out, or you’ve got a wild idea you’d like to see in clay, just get in touch. We love collaborating, and we’ll do our best to work with you, whatever your budget or vision may be.
Thanks for being here – we’re so glad you found us.
